Timed events--Outside lights at your front door and on your patio come on at dusk and turn off at a pre-determined time, without you doing a thing. Even when you are away on vacation, the cycle remains the same.
Sensors--Your kids walk into the bathroom in the morning to brush their teeth and rush out without turning the light off. The remote sensor turns the lights off 5 minutes later.
